Ceasar Cone Elementary

Ceasar_Cone_Elementary_School465 students. 200 JLG volunteers and more than 1,000 members. One partnership.

Just like the JLG, Ceasar Cone Elementary School is led by a mission — to provide an environment in which there are opportunities for all children to reach their maximum potential and to become productive citizens in an ever-changing world.

When Cone first approached the JLG, they told us that “The largest unmet need at Cone Elementary is the underdevelopment of avenues and processes for true partnering relationships between parents, students, and community within the school’s staff to improve student learning and wellness.”

A designated low-performing school, 97 percent of Ceasar Cone Elementary students qualify for free or reduced lunch. 14.2 percent are proficient in math. And 12 percent of Cone students were homeless in 2012.

But the JLG believes that the Cone Elementary Cougars are much more than numbers. That’s why we’ve invested the full force of the JLG’s time, talent and treasure in supporting Cone through a multi-year partnership. That investment spans two dozen League programs and community partners, emphasizing areas that will help Cone Cougars reach their maximum potential: academic progress; health, nutrition and wellness; basic needs, including feeding programs and school supplies; literacy; parental involvement; and school enrichment.

Three Years of Achievements

In the JLG’s first three years of partnership with Cone Elementary in 2013–2016, we provided:

  • Over $170,000 through 37 community programs
  • 5,646 bags of food through Backpack Beginnings
  • 5,212 weekend meal kits through Out of the Garden
  • Over 30,000 pounds of food at Peeler Rec Center through Out of the Garden’s Mobile Food Pantry
  • More than 300 JLG members volunteering more than 2000 hours at Cone Elementary.

On top of that, over 200 students graduated from the 12-week Raising a Reader program, 208 new books were purchased for the Media Center, and over 450 students were presented the USDA My Plate curriculum through Kids in the Kitchen two years in a row.

Our Continuing Partnership

As the League embarks on the third year of our three-year partnership with Cone Elementary, our goals are to create a sense of community among students, parents and teachers, as well as create a sustainability plan to make sure the League’s work at Cone continues well into the future. Cone is our school!
