Introducing Our 2017-2018 Community Program Partners

Community Program Kickoff

Earlier this year, the Junior League of Greensboro announced our new focus area: the aging community. We’re pleased to introduce you to our community program partners and provide insight on how our volunteers will support them throughout the year.

Our Partners

Adult Center for Enrichment (ACE): Health Optimization, Fitness

JLG will support this initiative with 6-8 volunteers and $3,500.

ACE offers an adult daycare/day health center that provides meaningful activities for participants while freeing up family members during the work day. Health Optimization is a new program designed to enhance the mental, physical, and spiritual well-being of adults who attend. Volunteers will be developing fitness program for ACE participants, leading a fitness class for ACE participants, and also training ACE staff and other volunteers to be able to lead the fitness class. This placement will include planning meetings with flexible times, and volunteering at an ACE site during the day.

Corporation of Guardianship: Friends Against Fraud

JLG will support this initiative with 8-10 volunteers and $10,200.

The Friends Against Fraud project will offer community-wide trainings to help raise awareness of elder financial abuse and to help prevent older adults from being financially exploited. Training materials developed by the FDIC and the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau (“Money Smart for Older Adults”) will be adapted for use with this project. JLG is to be the “face” of these programs in the Greensboro community. Volunteers will attend a training session by CoG and will then support the program by planning and promoting six events, acting as trainers at the events and helping with the day-of event logistics. Volunteers will be responsible for scheduling and planning their own training events. As this population is more active during daylight hours and caregivers and family may have more availability in the evening or weekends, some events will be held weekdays while others will be held on weekends..

Raising a Reader

JLG will support this initiative with 4-6 volunteers and $1,500.

Raising a Reader (RAR) helps families with children to practice and maintain a home-based literacy routine critical for school success. The research is clear: When families are involved, children’s academic achievement improves. This placement will put books in the homes and the hands of all kindergarteners at Cone Elementary. Volunteers will host a kick-off party to introduce families to the concept and conclude with a celebration for participating families. Throughout the school year, volunteers will go to kindergarten classrooms at Cone Elementary to help rotate the bags. Each bag contains a different set of age-appropriate books. Rotation logistics include checking in the bags, doing an inventory, giving the books a proactive cleaning with disinfectant wipes, and reissuing the next bag of books.

Community Housing Solutions

JLG will support this initiative with 8-10 volunteers and $10,200.

Volunteers with our Community Housing Solutions project will complete a total of six home repairs, including building ramps and other health-related repairs as related to water damage, performing demolition entrances to make them wheelchair accessible, installing grab bars and levered door handles, and other projects. Activities may also include yard work, such as removing trees and shrubs that have fallen on and damaged homes. These projects will take place on Saturdays, each lasting 6-7 hours. The committee will meet in between home repairs to plan slideshows of projects to be presented at JLG general membership meetings.

Senior Resources of Guilford: Grandparents Raising Grandchildren (GRG)

JLG will support this initiative with 7-9 volunteers and $1,375.

This committee will coordinate program activities for two GRG support groups. All meetings will be held in the evening to accommodate working grandparents. JLG volunteers will help plan and conduct the meetings by identifying and inviting speakers, serving dinner, and introducing the speakers. JLG volunteers will also meet with the GRG support group coordinator to help plan and implement a Career Night dinner. Volunteers will assist with the event by helping to identify and secure three speakers to share their work experiences with the grandchildren and their grandparents, planning the program for the evening, introducing speakers, and planning and conducting alternate activities for the grandchildren under 8 years old who are too young for Career Night speakers. The committee will also assist with the annual Jingle Bell Ball and host a toy drive for the event.

Kids in the Kitchen (KITK)

JLG will support this initiative with 6-8 volunteers and $2,000.

KITK is a Junior League initiative that began in 2006.The goal is to promote child health and wellness by empowering children and youth to make healthy lifestyle choices, thereby preventing obesity and its associated health risks. KITK uses hands-on curriculum to educate both the parent and child on healthy eating choices. KITK will provide information on preparation of healthy meals and snacks. In addition, KITK will engage the children and parents in a conversation about a healthy lifestyle that includes not only healthy eating, but physical activity as well. The committee will have six events during the year. Five events will be at LeBauer Park for the community. They will also have a table and provide a demonstration at Touch a Truck in October. This committee will meet monthly as a group for planning and training.

Food Assistance

JLG will support this initiative with 8-10 volunteers and $3,000.

Food Assistance serves low-income and disabled seniors in Guilford County with their Groceries on Wheels Program. Volunteers will work in the warehouse, getting groceries ready for delivery to seniors who are age 62+ and low income or without income, and are usually housebound. Some volunteers may also choose to assist with food deliveries.
